Welcome to Life in Jesus Christ

The Christians at Focus Bible Church (FBC) welcome you as a member of Gods’ family, and want to encourage you in this new and challenging life that you have entered into.  This life will be very rewarding if the Lord Jesus, and not self, is the one you seek to please.  The following material based on God’s Word, is to divert you from trusting your feelings and to trust God’s Word (The Bible), as your total authority regarding all of life, your forgiveness of sin, and in-fact, everything to do with spiritual matters.
Be alert Satan may tempt you to doubt your secure position in Christ.

You can trust God for the following:
1)  God has given you eternal life
Your best defence against Satan is God’s Word and by persevering in your new faith in Jesus Christ (Hebrews 3:14).  You will know you have Eternal Life, because God said so, if you believe in his son (John 3:16).  Jesus Himself said He has given you eternal life, you will never perish (John 10:28).  God wrote in 1 John 5:11-12, 20 an assurance of this life to the believer and added that those who don’t have His Son don’t have eternal life.  It cost the Lord Jesus His precious life blood to obtain this Eternal Life for you.

2)  Forgiveness
Sin separated you from God, but that is now history because God said in Colossians 1:12-14 that He has forgiven all your sins.  Not just the past but the present and future sins also.  Furthermore God has promised not to remember them again in Hebrews 10:17.

3)  Sonship
God has not only given you all the above but He has adopted you into his family, made you his son/daughter through the Lord Jesus (John 1:12, Galatians 3:26). These gifts, which were instantaneous when you repented of your sin and believed in the Lord Jesus, were brought about by the power of the Holy Spirit.

4)  Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
God gave you His Holy Spirit as a guarantee of ownership (Ephesians 1:13-14) and has made you a new person in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). You wouldn’t belong to Christ if you didn’t have His Spirit (Romans 8:9).  You have been baptised with the Spirit into God’s family (1 Corinthians 12:13), never to fall from that position (Jude 24).

Philippians 2:13 says, “it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good pleasure”. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.”  Allow His Spirit, which lives in you, to control your life and He will produce the fruit of the Spirit as in Galatians 5:22-26.  This is what being filled with the Spirit means.  Being filled is God’s command (Ephesians 5:15-18), obedience will keep you from much sin and pain.

Keep in The Word of God (the Sword of the Spirit, Ephesians 6:17) which the Holy Spirit will use to teach the things God wants you to know (John 16:13). In John 16:13-15 He tells you only what the Lord Jesus gives, so Christ receives all the glory.  The Holy Spirit has already given you everything needed to live a successful Christian life (2 Peter 1:3).

1)  Fact, not feeling
Even though you will fail God at times and feel discouraged as a result, remember He said in Hebrews 13:5, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you”.  No matter what, keep on living for Jesus Christ.  You are promised in Romans 8:1 never to be condemned.  Plus you are going to be with the Lord for ever (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).  These facts are only reality for those who remain in Jesus Christ (John 15:4, 7; 2 Timothy 2:12). Your perseverance in the faith will be your greatest assurance of the authenticity of your salvation.

You have seen from scripture some of the things God has ,in His love and grace, done for you.  Now out of love for Him, make every effort to continue to be the person He wants you to be, in order to be a mature Christian and to bring glory to Him.

2)  Prayer and Bible study
Daily walk and talk with God in prayer; praising Him, thanking Him and making your requests to Him.  Pray always to God the Father, in the name of the Lord Jesus, (Colossians 3:17).

Read, meditate on, and obey God’s Word. Then you will prosper in your relationship with God (Joshua 1:8), don’t neglect it but crave for its spiritual food value (1 Peter 2:2-3).

3)  Desire for holy living
If you truly want to live for God and you are obeying Him, this shows that you belong to Him (1 John 2:3-5).  If you trust the Lord, realising that He knows best, Psalm 32:10 says that His unfailing love surrounds you.  In Psalm 37:4-5 God says that if you delight yourself in the Lord, commit your way to Him and trust Him, then He will give you the desires of your heart.  In other words, if you live wholly for the Lord He will place the correct desires in your heart.
4)  Love for other Christians
Another indication that you belong to Christ is a love for other Christians.  You will prefer their company because you belong to the same spiritual family, God lives in us all (1 John 4:11-21).  Showing love to other Christians is a sign to unbelievers that we belong to God (John 13:34-35).

5)  Desire to tell others
Wanting to share the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with others is a healthy sign of God’s love in you (Acts 4:20).  Andrew, in John 1:41-42, immediately found and introduced his brother Simon to Jesus. Many people are secretly hungry to know the simple truth without all the man-made trappings.  Ask God to bring you into contact with such people, so you can share the Gospel with them, give your testimony.

6)  Living victoriously
If you are putting into practice the things taught from scripture in this study you will be living victoriously not because you have gained much knowledge, but because you are allowing God, by His Spirit to control your life.  Even though problems etc. are still part of life, look past the present to the Lord’s returning for you (1 Thessalonians 4:16-19, John 14:3).  Give thanks to God for everything (Ephesians 5:20, 1 Thessalonians 5:18), talk to God daily in prayer, listen to Him by reading His Word and learn of the wonderful benefits you have inherited as a child of God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

As we continue to study God’s Word together we shall discover that the truths mentioned in this lesson is just the beginning. There lies before us an eternity of growing to know God better.
